BS 8580-1:2019 Water quality, Risk Assessments for Legionella control. Code of Practice
Published in January 2019 the revised BS 8580 “Water Quality – Guide to risk assessments for Legionella Control” applies to all Legionella Risk Assessments, both new and existing.
The BS 8580 is in addition to the Approved Code of Practice document, “Legionnaires’ Disease: The control of Legionella bacteria in water systems (ACoP L8) and provides guidance for Legionella Risk Assessments for all artificial water systems. The new British Standard is aimed at all duty holders including independent risk assessors, managing agents and facility managers.
BS 8580 addresses a range of water uses including the following:
- Industrial cooling waters
- Hospitals and care homes
- Leisure centres
- Water distribution and use within buildings
- Commercial uses of water
- Industrial uses of water
- Power generation
A Legionella Risk Assessment is required under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and the regulations outlined in ACoP L8. These regulations must be adhered to in order to ensure that you are compliant. It is the responsibility of the duty holder to ensure that a suitable Legionella risk assessment is regularly performed to consider, assess and manage the risk from Legionella bacteria and the BS 8580 is designed to enhance the management and control of Legionella bacteria in the risk assessment process.
Zeta Services’ Legionella Risk Assessments ensure compliance with UK regulation and incorporate the requirements of the new BS 8580. If you would like to receive further guidance on BS 8580 contact a member of our team today.
